A comparison between the Cumberland Basin area of the City Docks in 1960 - and 2000.

Virtually no difference?  Look at the road layout !

back to the bridge

A line from an Adge Cutler song from the 1960's - (Adge and the Wurzels were Bristol's much loved country and cider folk singers ...)

.... hast seen our brand new bridge,

Down there in Cumberland Basin?

The cars go by like thunder,

Up'n down and under,

But where they go's

No body knows

It aint no flamin' wonder!

The system must have been the only major arterial route with a 45 degree left hand give way merge with no light controls, and visibility completely restricted by a mass of concrete pillars.  Add to this a 40 mph speed limit with traffic approaching the merge down an incline....... Bad enough in a car, for commercial vehicle drivers with closed sides and no rear windows, the layout was extremely dangerous.
