1878 Fairbairn Steam crane. Designed to lift 35 tons.  In regular use until 1973.  

Now restored and preserved in working order.

The Docks are now used for pleasure boating and leisure.  In the mid 1950s this area would have been full of merchant vessels.

Later cranes by the same manufacturer.  Also redundant but preserved at the City Industrial Museum.  At one time there was a plan to use the control cabin as an office .. not fun climbing up to it on a wet day.  The idea was was soon forgotten.

The Mayflower steam tug - Bristol's oldest working ship - built long after William Farvis began the business !

...and a much later vessel of the same type - John King towed ships and barges in the River Avon for many years and was a common sight top Bristolians.

Bridge of the John King - no complex electronics in those days - a wheel and a single lever for the engine - and that was considered an advance over a telegraph system and an engineer on station below deck to control the engine and gearbox.



The Matthew - a replica of John Cabot's ship proceeding down the Avon under diesel power and being passed by a Sevtec Surveyor light hovercraft.


and of course Balmoral - seen here moored for the winter refit - Farvis sponsor a thermostat controlled boiler which is used for repairs to her decks and planking.
