SS Great Britain - at least the funnel and masts - and in the foreground a replica of the 'Matthew' on which another famous  adopted Bristolian, John Cabot set out for America. The trip was undertaken again on this replica which is now moored in Bristol.

Did you know the Great Britain got stuck in the lock at Bristol and was nearly wrecked before she ever went to sea ?  Visit our historic harbour tour to find out more!

Great Britain was NOT the first iron passenger liner, nor the first propeller driven ocean going ship.  She is unique because she brought all these features together, and more so because of the design features that made her massively strong,  very luxurious and technically advanced.  It is interesting that trials of a replica propeller as designed by Brunel indicated that the design he used was almost comparable with modern ships.

Both ships are open to the public and well worth a visit.

..... and yes, as far as we know FARVIS iron-work was included in the Great Britain!
